Tips in Health-Checking Your Roof

Different kinds of natural phenomena put our roofs at constant risk. It is crucial to keep it checked for damages all the time to avoid unexpected and costly repairs.
If you don’t know how and where to start, here are the things you can do for an efficient roof health check.

Perform an inspection inside your house

Primary signs of a damaged roof are usually seen in the attic. Check for any part that is sagging, has water rings, or dark patches, as these are all indications of roof damage.
It is also useful to check your vents for any blockage that can stop air from escaping. It might lead to moisture build-ups and condensation and eventually damage your roof from the inside.

Look for loose or damaged tiles

Checking for loose or damaged tiles require climbing on to your roof and should only be done with proper safety equipment.
If you don’t have the right equipment or don’t have any experience and are not used to working in heights, you should not climb up. Instead, ask help from professional roofing contractors who can handle the task with comfort and ease.

Check the flashing

Flashing is a metal strip used to seal skylights, vents, chimneys, and satellite dishes attached to the roofing. Bad weather can cause damage to your flashing and roofs. To avoid these, you have to make sure that there are no gaps between the roof and flashing so no water can seep in and cause damage.
You can also use a waterproof silicone sealant to repair or replace cracked sealing caulk, available in your local shops. But if you are no expert in doing the task, keep yourself and your family safe by hiring professional roofing contractors to perform it.

Clear gutters from blockage

Damaged or blocked gutters are also among the culprits of property damages. If a gutter is blocked, the water can build up and pool underneath your eaves. It can also leak into your home’s foundation.
Check and remove any debris and leaves build-ups that might be blocking your gutters. Repair or replace any holes, tears, and a sagging section of the gutter. Also, make sure that the gutter is securely connected to the walls.

Remove moss growth

They may seem harmless, but moss can also cause damage to your roofing. They quickly spread during the summer season, so you should perform a roof check and moss removal before it becomes unmanageable. You can brush a few mosses off your roof with a stiff broom. But if it has already covered your entire roof, it would be beneficial to ask for advice and help from professionals.
